Virginia Beach Engagement Portraits

Virginia Beach Engagement Photos

I recently spent a few minutes with my good friends, Elizabeth and Mike, taking engagement portraits at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. The weather was ugly: dark, cold, and winds gusting to 30mph. We almost called it off, but Elizabeth and Mike are troopers and we wanted to get some photos for their save-the-date cards.

So what do you do when the day is dark and grey? Hunt for color! And that’s exactly what we did. Elizabeth is a big fan of the beach balls installation on the boardwalk, and even has one of the earliest prints of my Beachballs piece hanging in her house. So after 5 minutes of shooting south on the boardwalk, we hightailed it north to the beach balls.

I’ve been friends with Elizabeth since our high school days at First Colonial and Cox, but this was my first time meeting Mike. When they asked what they should wear, I told them they needed to break out their Canadian Tuxedoes, a reference to the all-denim getup used in the movie, Super Troopers. I knew Mike and I would instantly get along when he immediately began quoting the movie back to me. (I don’t know what it is, but military pilots can quote every movie ever made.)

When the posing got a bit stagnant, I started reenacting the Glamour Shots scene from Napoleon Dynamite, and Mike’s utter brilliance can be further noted in this photograph, which he replicated perfectly.

We finished up in about 45 minutes, which is much shorter than most of my engagement sessions; hopefully we can make some more photographs once the weather is less dreary!
